The name of Intelligent Transportation Systems was accepted on first, World ITS Congress in Paris in 1994 and stands for systems, which encompass vast collection of various technologies (telecommunications, informatics, sensor and control technologies) and management techniques applied to transportation to make our lives safer, increase road capacity and reduce environmental impacts of transportation.

The benefits arising from use of Intelligent Transportation Systems [2] :
  • Increased road capacity (an increase of 20 – 25%)
  • Reduction in the number of crashes (40 – 80%)
  • Time travel savings (45 – 70%)
  • Reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions (30 – 50%)
  • Better comfort, convenience and improved safety and security
  • Savings in operating and maintenance costs
  • Increased economic productivity (creates jobs, provides a better ability to move freight and promote trade)

ITS Architecture

One of the most important task for countries, which are trying to bring Intelligent Transportation Systems to live is to set up an ITS Architecture. Intelligent Transportation Systems architecture is a number of connections (logical, physical and communicational) between elements that creates an Intelligent Transportation Systems in order to make scalable and easy in management and maintenance solutions[5]. National Architectures don’t indicate to particular company or technology and make systems open for competition. Nowadays in Poland ITS solutions have "an island” character, which means apart they fulfill all tasks, but when we will try to connect them together it could be possible they cannot cooperate, not to bring potential benefits.
